[MIKARA] When did you know you wanted to become a fashion designer?
[JENNIFER] When I was a child, I loved to draw outfits. I remember admiring Jean-Paul Gaultier and wanting to be a fashion designer myself one day.
[MIKARA] How did you get into leather bags/accessories being apart of your niche as a designer?
[JENNIFER] I first did an applicated art school in the Jewelry Field, more precisely, as a goldsmith. Apart from this, I have always loved bags and I wanted to combine two types of accessories that I love. The bag has this special meaning, it is more than an accessory, it is functional. Like a precious box. I took the chance to create my first bags for my diploma collection and used my know-how as goldsmith to imagine the construction of my bags.
[MIKARA] On your site, you stated ” Inspired by the traditional art of paper cutting..” whats the story behind getting inspired by paper cutting and incorporating it in your designs?
[JENNIFER] – In the house where I grew up, a wall was decorated by paper cutting art and traditional swiss paintings made by family members and family friends. I have an emotional connection to these images that represent a simple and peaceful life in the swiss countryside. From an aesthetic perspective, I just love this way of creating a visual language in paper cutting that can be read by anybody. – I wanted to tell a story that is closer to my environment, a story that is more modern. I imagined a new visual language with symbols inspired from industries in the region I come from: pharmaceutical & watchmaking. – Then I have incorporated these symbols into the bags in a way that they become something else. They are part of the functions in the product and have a reason to be, more than just decorative.
[MIKARA] What is your process for designing? How do get into the rhythm of creating your collection(s)/pieces?
[JENNIFER] Boredom and frustration get me into the process of creation. I am inspired by everything that surrounds me from art to swiss landscapes and of course I love to look at other fashion brands.
[MIKARA] What is your definition of fashion?
[JENNIFER] Fashion can be a strong communication tool and a way to express creativity. It is a celebration of individual beauty. But, personally, I like better using the word “style”. Style lasts, contrary to fashion that is ephemeral.
[MIKARA] In 3-5 words, describe your brand, Madi ?
[JENNIFER] Authenticity – Feminine Beauty – Swiss quality
[MIKARA] How has fashion made you express your new dimensions in your brand? Life? Confidence?
[JENNIFER] I am a quite introvert person, I don’t like being the center of attention, but I always liked to dress differently. As I said, I see fashion as a celebration of the body and a way to embrace it. This is something that I want to infuse in my brand. Don’t be scared to step out and be outstanding. Take the space you want as a human being and don’t be afraid to SHINE.
[MIKARA] What luxury designer/brand do you admire the most and why?
[JENNIFER] There are many but one of them is Delpozo. I love the clean cuts, bright colours, architectural volumes yet very feminine and romantic.
[MIKARA] If you could pick a celebrity/influence to be your brand ambassador for a season, who would it be and why?
[JENNIFER] Someone like Caroline Issa, she has a strong, fun and colourful style.
[MIKARA] Outside of fashion, what do you like to do for fun?
[JENNIFER] Spending time with my friends and family is very important to me. To evacuate stress, I like to swim and more specifically, I play waterpolo in a local team.
[MIKARA] In the next 5 years, where would you like to see yourself?
[JENNIFER] I hope to expend the brand to a wider range of products and have a jewelry line.
